Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Chassis
Chassis design, structural analysis and systems integration for a competition-ready student AUV.
Designing for the dive.
This project began during my Bachelor’s degree with the need to design and fabricate an AUV for student competitions. I was responsible for the hull and chassis design, structural testing and stability analysis, progressing the vehicle from requirements and comparable-vehicle studies through CAD, FEA, fabrication and testing.
- Dimensions
- 600 × 450 × 300 mm
- Weight
- 17 kg with electronics fitted
- Tools
- SolidWorks and Ansys
- Materials
- Aluminium 6061 chassis; clear acrylic hull cylinders

Engineering contribution
- Developed a requirement-driven, modular chassis architecture.
- Modelled the vehicle and completed structural analysis workflows in SolidWorks and Ansys.
- Used 3D-printed components to validate details before full-scale fabrication.
- Integrated batteries, electronics, thrusters and mission payloads while considering weight distribution, structural loading and watertight integrity.
- Specified axial and radial O-ring sealing for the main and battery hulls.
